The Silver Fleece Medal

The most renowned and prestigious of all Chivalric Orders in the world, the Golden Fleece, is given by the King of Spain, Grand Master and Sovereign of the Order.

To keep up with the tradition, The Spanish Civilization Site has created the more modest Silver Fleece Medal to recognize those people who have made outstanding contributions to the Internet Civilization community.

In 1999, the medal was awarded in a monthly, occasionally biweekly, basis. In 2000 it was awarded bimonthly. Since August 2001, this section has been dead, but now we're opening again. Wel'll give the award bimonthly if there are enough nominations. We'll award not only for Civ2 contributions but for every contribution to the Civilization community. But there will be always a place in our hearts for Civ2 fans...

Nominations are encouraged, either by e-mail or by leaving a message in the Guestbook. It is not necessary to have a website to receive the medal. No self-nominations, please!

The Silver Fleece Medal Awardees

JUL/AUG 2004 - CIARAN SLAVIN "CURTSIBLING"

"From my earliest Civ2 days, I was aware of the great Spanish Civ Site and also the famed Silver Fleece Award. Seeing the awards list that contains many heroes of old: John Valdez, Mr Temba and Captain Nemo – I used to have a crazy dream of being part of that mighty rollcall. But I never thought it would be a reality, just a wild fantasy. Now I am awestruck to be inducted along with these great names of Civ. The dream is now a reality, and truly I am humbled. This an honour that any scenario creator would wish for. I will wear the Silver Fleece with pride"
MAY/JUN 2004 - DUSTIN SMITH "GIDUSTIN"

"When I created the website about 2 years ago, it was mainly to organize the units for my own use. I never imagined that it would grow to the size it is now, and never expected it to win any awards. I am honored to recieve this award, and will dedicate my new awards page to it."
MAR/APR 2004 - GARETH BIRCH "FAIRLINE"

"Thank you very much for the award of the Silver Fleece, which I am honoured to accept. The list of previous winners leaves one both a little over-awed and with a feeling of being unworthy to be mentioned in the same breath. It is fantastic to receive recognition from one of the foremost civ sites for just drawing graphics; my thanks go to the true heroes of the civ community, the scenario designers, who keep Civ2 alive and fresh so many years after it was first released"
JAN/FEB 2004 - DICK JENSEN "KAL-EL"

"On behalf of the DyP team, I would be honored to accept the Silver Fleece Medal. The whole team has worked tirelessly to put together the mod, and we can only hope that the community plays and enjoys DyP as much as we enjoyed working on it. I would especially like to recognize the work of Martin Isaksen, Isak, who has been my right hand man throughout the entire process. Robert Olesen, RobO, was one of the original "Big Three" along with Isak and me, and his blood, sweat, and tears and countless hours of work were invaluable in keeping my feet on the ground and the mod fair and balanced. And then there is the rest of the team, and of course the numerous players in our beta test group. Without them we could have never gotten the mod to the finished product that it is now. Thank you, everyone who has contributed to the mod, it has been a real labour of love."
NOV/DEC 2003 - ARNE SCHMIED

"First I must say, it's surprise. I feel a bit unworthy of being included on the list of Civ2's greatest scenario designers on this universe. Well, it's been an honour and a pleasure to give the Civilization 2 community help for creating better scenarios by making gfx and coproducing the website with all the Civ stuff. Now it's an honour and of course a pleasure to receive this medal. Thank you."
SEP/OCT 2003 - JOSÉ E. PELLÓN "KRAMSIB"

"I proudly accept the highest award given by the most important Civilization community in Spain and the spanish World. It's a honor and a pleasure to receive this award that means a recognition to all the efforts required by the organisation of the Progressive Games, what wouldn't have been possible without the support of my nearest collaborators: Antxon, JM_Ruiz, Niessuh y WRW. I want to dedicate this prize to them and to everybody in the Spanish Civilization Forum because without their support, this wouldn't have been possible"
JULY/AUG 2003 - HENRIK LOHMANDER

"I thank the spanish civilization site for this great award. I'm greatly honoured not to say humbled and suprised to be allowed to join this list of great scenario creators and distinguished people of the civ comunity!"
MAY/JUNE 2003 - EL MENCEY

"It's a honor and a pleasure for me to receive the prestigious “Silver Fleece Medal”, and become part of this select group of people who received the award. This prize will only make me continue working with even more strenght. Thanks a lot to the Spanish Civilization Site and to everybody who supported me."
MAR/APR 2003 - PHENIX BENTON "EXILE"

"This is a surprise, a pleasure, and an honor. It's quite a good feeling to be recognized by the Civ2 community via this award. There is no doubt I join an illustrious company of rowdy mavericks who, unhappy and unsatisfied with Civ2 the way it is, ventured into the unknown realms of design and research, returning with the precious treasures we all know and call scenarios. I raise a virtual toast to this wayward brotherhood of Silver Fleece holders, wish us all well, and hope that Civ2 scenarios never stop appearing from the aether."
JAN/FEB 2003 - JORRIT VERMEIREN "MERCATOR"

"I could go and rant about how I feel I should have gotten this much earlier, but you've caught me at unawares. Now the moment is there, I'm humbled and I don't quite know what to say. It's been an honour and a pleasure to serve the Civilization II community, and I hope to continue to do so for some time to come. Thank you for this sign of appreciation!"
 2002 - CHRIS POULOS "CHRIS62"

"I thank you for this great honor, I feel I am unworthy of being included with the fine scenario designers who have been so honored. It is a great thing that a game so old, still generates such interest. I thank you all."
JUL/AUG 2001 - BERND BROSING "BEBRO"

"Thank you very much for this award. The Silver Fleece Medal is a
great honor for me, especially since it comes from one of the most respected scenario designers. I wish to thank anyone who helped me, with advice or as testers of my scenarios - these people deserve in fact a good part of the award, which is a big motivation for me to continue working for the community of one of the greatest games ever"
MAY/JUN 2001 - JOHN VALDEZ

"It is a pleasure and a privilege to receive the Silver Fleece Medal. In accordance with such a fine award, I wanted to say that it is an honor to be recognized among so many who have shared the same mission to bring their thoughts and creativity to the
world of Civilization"
MAR/APR 2001 - THUNDERFALL

"I feel very honored to receive this prestigious award. It has been a great experience making CivFanatics and working with some of the greatest scenario designers and highly motivated players in the process. Appreciation from visitors and now the Silver Fleece Medal have made it extremely rewarding. Thank you very much for the recognition"
JAN/FEB 2001 - WILLIAM KEENAN

"Though I feel unworthy of being included on the list of Civilization's elite contributors, the winners of the Silver Fleece Medal, I am both extremely honored and very grateful to be given this award. Thank you"
NOV/DEC 2000 - BRIAN MASON "TECHUMSEH"

"It's wonderful to be recognized just for having so much fun. It is a great honour indeed, as evidenced by the illustrious alumni of this award. As Albert Einstein said, 'if we can see farther, it is because we are standing on the shoulders of those who came before'. Thank you"
SEP/OCT 2000 - CARL FRITZ "GOTHMOG"

"It's nice to have one's work well thought of. Therefore it's a great honor to receive the Silver Fleece and be listed among the many Civ 2 experts whose scenarios I have studied for ideas I could use with my own scenarios"
JUL/AUG 2000 - PAUL CULLIVAN "KULL"

"Like the previous honorees, I am pleased, surprised, and humbled. Those aren't just stock phrases, either. In an era where self-centered sports stars routinely pull down mega-million dollar salaries, it's truly gratifying to be associated with a group of people for whom it really IS all about love of the game"
MAY/JUN 2000 - JESUS MUÑOZ

"It makes me feel very proud that my work in the world of Civilization II has been recognized by this important award. I wish to dedicate it to all those who enjoyed, currently enjoy and will enjoy my scenarios in the future"
MAR/APR 2000 - STEFAN HÄRTEL

"Thank you very much for the award. I feel very honoured, and it is very encouraging for me to know that my work for Civ2 is appreciated. I hope to keep on making scenarios for the game until its dying days, and I firmly believe that I'm not the only one"
JAN/FEB 2000 - MICHAEL DAUMEN

"It is quite a compliment to be mentioned with the brightest minds of the Civ2 community. I would like to thank those designers who have made the scenarios I like, not only for hours of enjoyment but for the inspiration to improve my scenarios"
DECEMBER 1999 - LEONS PETRAZICKIS "ST. LEO"

"All my life I had a dream, a great dream of serving the Civilization community. The Silver Fleece award is the ultimate manifestation of any such dream and as such is the greatest honour that can befall a humble webmaster such as myself. I thank you and wish you all the best in the coming century"
NOVEMBER 1999 - MICHAEL JESZENKA

"Thank you very much for recognizing my contributions to the Civ2 community. This is the first official award I've received but the greater reward is the enjoyment I get from investing my time in the game. I hope that people will continue making great scenarios for me to play and I hope the promise of this medal will serve as motivation for them"
OCTOBER 1999 - ALEX "THE MAGNIFICENT" MOR

"Thank you for this award. I am greeting your idea to find a new source of life for the Civ2 community. The medal is a good action. All authors who are already awarded worked hard with their great scenarios and graphics, and never got nothing in exchange except popularity. This is our destiny. Despite I made a long time pause in my work I hope that time will come when Alex returns..."
SEPTEMBER 1999 - CAPTAIN NEMO

"I am very aware of the prestigious "Silver Fleece Medal" award and I am very honored to be included with the great Civ II authors, even if, somehow, I feel unworthy in such company... This also has encouraged me to return to work and finish my latest scenario... coming soon... to a website near you!"
AUGUST 1999 - JOHN ELLIS

"I am delighted to accept the Silver Fleece, knowing how highly the Award is thought of in Civ II circles. I am still trying to improve my scenario designing, which still can leave me very frustrated with the bugs and imperfections I or others notice in them as time goes on. This Award really does encourage me to persue the Holy Grail of the perfect Civ II scenario"
JULY 1999 - STEVE STRAYER

"Thank you very much for the award. In regards to Civ2 I feel 'my work is done'. I had a job to do, and I did my best to rectify what I felt was missing from Civ2. As long as people still play Civ2, I will always ensure the Fascist Patch is available. Now like the soldier from ballads past, I shall not die, but simply fade-away"
JUNE 1999 - MISTER TEMBA

"I am truly in shock, to be awarded this along with all the greats of civ is something that I never expected. Thanks to everyone who ever played anything I made. It means a lot to me"
MAY 1999 - ALLARD HÖFELT

"As flattered as I feel at this moment, it is hard for me to formulate the right words with which to express my enormous thanks. This award will definitely help me to concentrate once again more on this great game whose popularity never seems to end"
APR 1999 - DANIEL QUICK

"When I took over UCIVII back in August of '96, I was not prepared for the incredible sense of community Civilization fans already established online. I feel proud to have been a part of its growth since that time, and am very honoured to be chosen recipient of this month's Silver Fleece Medal"
APR 1999 - MARKOS GIANNOPOULOS

"When I started my first civ2 site, TFGC2S, I never thought I would get a medal for doing something like that. My big thanks to the Spanish Civ2 Site for this award. I truly hope this community of civ sites and people we have created through the years can stand the test of time and new civ games!"
MAR 1999 - HARLAN THOMPSON

"Thanks so much for the medal- I wish I had a web page I could pin it on! Though I am 'retiring' from Civ2, I hope to be as busy as ever making scenarios for CtP"
FEB 1999 - PETER DELANEY "BLACKCLOVE"

"I am truly honored to have won the Silver Fleece Medal and will display it proudly. If I have perhaps poured too much time into this game, at least I know that others have enjoyed the results. Thanks"
JAN 1999 - ANDREW HOEKZEMA "HOEK"

"I humbly accept this prestigious award. My contributions to the Civ 2 community were all a pleasure to give, and I hope I can do even more to make the game more enjoyable for all players"
JAN 1999 - CAMERON HILLS

"I feel honoured to receive 'The Silver Fleece' award from the renowned Spanish Civilization II Site; a page that continues to present amongst the most innovative, skilfully researched, and cleverly themed scenarios on the Internet. That this site should offer prizes to other people for notable contributions is an irony, as itself has 'led the way' in creating new horizons for scenario authors over so many years."
