The
Column

Hello everybody. Hannibal is quite busy,
you know, always fleeing of roman legions, so he won't be able to continue
writing his column for a while. Who knows? Maybe he'll write his next column
from Tullianum. |

Time has gone by since last Hannibal's
column; finally, spanish Play the World version and civ3 patch v1.29f
finally came out. Now, we're trying to get translated into spanish the last
PTW patch (v1.21f); german and italian versions are about to appear, so we
suppose spanish version will come out in about two or three months (we're
optimists). Regrettabily, spanish Play The World, in spite of including
1.14f patch has any huge mistakes. First, translation seems to have been
done by an authomatic computer translator rather than a professional human
translator, but we're already used to that. But there are mistakes in the
rules of the game, and these mistakes mainly affect a tribe... do you guess
which one? That's it: the spanish. |

"Conquistador" unit, that
should have been best military unit in the modern age until
cavalry appears with Military Tradition, is one of the worst
units we've seen: their characteristics are slower than
knight's... it's strange because they're supposed to handle
firearms. OK, that's not so important because they compensate it
with their movement abilities (the "alpine" movement we had in
civ2). But this is only the beginning: in the american version,
"conquistador" appears with navigation, and is made obsolete by
Military Tradition (and thus can be improved to Cavalry). In the
spanish PTW, though, they appear with Military Tradition, making
Cavalry obsolete, so spanish can't build the best pre-tanks
military unit and have to build "conquistadores", that are
clearly inferior. |

|
Last but not least, new
tribes (not only the spanish this time) can't build
Privateers... Any special reasons? No. Who made rules file
(civ3x.bix) forgot to activate that capability in the new
tribes. Everybody can make a mistake, nobody's perfect, put in
my humble opinion this has gone too far. |

OK, I'm sick of blaming IG
Iberica for everything. We can also praise a distribution
company... another distribution company, of course. I'm typing
about FX Interactive, a modest distribution (and design) company
in Italy and Spain. Last Sunday the 24th of March, they released
(for 4.95€) Ultimate Civilization II, i.e Civilization II
Multiplayer Gold Edition without the scenarios that american
version had. It's the first time we've seen this game in Spain.
As a result of this, we're seeing a "renaissance" of this great
classic in the spanish fan community. We want to praise FX
interactive because they have published the best strategy game
for PC ever (in my humble opinion); I still can't believe that
Proein (original Civ2 distribution company in Spain) didn't
release it when they could... spanish fans won't ever forgive
them. Even more, they make good translations and have a very
good user support... what makes IG failures even less tolerable. |

Last, I want to remark a
historic fact: for the first time in history, Spanish
Civilization Site has spanish and english versions. We're still
translating, but we'll end the job. This site wants to be the
reference for the spanish civilization fan community, and I
think we're in the way. |
